What to Wear to an Engagement Party?

Love is in the air! In case you’ve been oblivious to all the ring selfies popping up on Instagram and Facebook, engagement season is in full swing and that means it’s time to get engagement party ready!

Whether you’ve just joined She Said Yes as one of the newly engaged, or you’ve been following a while and you’re attending engagement parties this summer season, chances are you’ll be getting ready to celebrate those upcoming nuptials. Oh, and while you’re getting engagement party ready, you’d better pick up the perfect engagement gift too!

So, what to wear to an engagement party?

If it’s your engagement party, you should wear whatever makes you feel beautiful and special! It’s one of the few times in life that it’s all about you and your fiancé. It’s traditional to wear white (and some like to feel every bit the bride-to-be by doing so) while others may not want to be any more in the ‘limelight’ than they already are. Whatever you do, dress confidently and comfortably so that you can enjoy yourself.

I’ve been shopping up a storm already this month, and picked up a few perfect pieces from Farmers to wear to the few engagement parties I’m attending, as well as finding some bride-worthy outfits to share with you.

Whistles white lace dress (limited stock left) would make a perfect summer engagement party pick.

In my experience, engagement parties vary widely from a very casual backyard soiree to a formal sit-down dinner at a restaurant, which will of course help to determine how you get engagement party ready! Personally, we erred towards a more formal gathering, and I wore a white full-length jumpsuit.

What do you wear if you’re attending the engagement party?

Due to the tradition of a bride wearing white to her engagement party, err on the side of caution and don’t show up to the bash wearing white, unless you’ve specifically spoken to the bride about doing so.

Don’t wear white to someone else’s engagement party (or wedding!) – and tread carefully if choosing a white-based pattern. If in doubt, don’t! This
I AM by Andrea Moore dress is a great, light summer choice that’s white-based, but has just enough pattern.

Have a look at the invitation – a traditional, printed invitation suggests a more formal occasion, and more formal engagement party occasionwear. There might even be a dress code on the invitation.

For a more formal venue, or ‘black tie’ dress code, this
Harlow Pleated Maxi Dress is ideal (P.S. how perfect a bridesmaid’s dress is this too!)

Of course, you can also tell a lot about an event from the engagement party venue. If it’s being held in a family garden or a public park or beach, dress accordingly.

Farmers has a multitude of outfits perfect for an engagement party. Like the bride-to-be, the most important thing is that you feel comfortable, and choosing something that you feel confident and happy in is key to that (and something you can dance in!).

If you wouldn’t usually wear a dress, dress up some pants with a bit of sparkle.

Make an effort, regardless. Whether it’s adding a bit of sparkle or having your hair done beforehand, it’s an occasion to honour the couple so set aside a little time to polish the look once you’ve chosen your perfect outfit. The question of what to wear to a engagement party is easily answered in Farmers’ womenswear – I had such a good time browsing the store and online to put together these looks to showcase the wide range of options. I’m a particular fan of the Andrea Moore print collection, I AM – so don’t be surprised if you see a few pieces on my Instagram this summer!

I shot these looks photos prior to my close friends’ engagement party because I was feeling totally glam having had my hair and makeup done earlier that day by Eithne CurranEithne’s just started offering a ‘Party Ready’ service which includes a hair wash and treatment, skin prep and treatment, full hair styling, full makeup, and nail paint and shape over a glass of champagne and nibbles, with Eithne’s glam central city studio all to yourself during your private appointment. The perfect way to glam up your new outfit to be engagement party ready!
