Bride’s Diary: A surprise visit to Queenstown and stunning proposal!

Allie, your proposal looked absolutely magical and your ring is stunning, thank you so much for sharing your story with She Said Yes.

How did you meet your now fiancé?

James and I met at a mutual friend’s Halloween party. I would love to say we were both dressed up as something funny or cute but neither of us were, how boring?! We got along instantly, had a great night together and have been dating ever since. This year’s Halloween (October 31st) will be our 6 year anniversary. To celebrate we will be spending it in LA then on to New York. Hopefully this year we will dress up as something exciting.

I love it! Well you’ve already had an exciting year, I have a feeling girls will be wanting to share your proposal pictures with their partners, it looks like an absolute dream proposal.

It was such a surprise! I was down in Queenstown for a couple of days for work. As I was walking out of the airport, James ran up and surprised me. I was totally shocked to see him but still didn’t really catch on to anything. We had lunch at the beautiful Jacks Point, before heading back to the airport. James had arranged for a private helicopter to take us to the top of The Remarkables. It was such a stunning, clear day and standing on the top of the mountain, it was just the most spectacular view. James asked the helicopter pilot to take a photo of us and as we were standing on the side of the mountain, James proposed.

James has such a way with words, I couldn’t help but cry and I’m not usually an emotional person. It was truly the most magical moment. We toasted with champagne and celebrated the night away. Queenstown has always been one of our favourite places in the world and now it is just so much more special.

A lot of people have asked if we had a photographer at the proposal. The photos were just taken by our amazing helicopter pilot.

That’s so cool, they really do look like professional photos, it’s so nice that you have photos of such a special moment.

Did you have any influence in your ring?  It looks so beautiful on you!

I had shown James a photo of ring I liked on Instagram, as I’m sure every girl has haha. But really, I hadn’t given him many details. I had told him I liked cushion cut diamonds.

James went to The Diamond Shop to help him design and make the ring.  Dan guided him through the entire process and helped him source the most beautiful diamond from the US. They were extremely professional and understanding of everything James was looking for. They made him feel comfortable and confident in knowing he was getting a high quality product as spending such a large amount of money can be daunting.

I cannot believe what an amazing job James and The Diamond Shop did making my ring. I couldn’t have designed it better myself.

Have you begun planning your wedding?

The first thing we did was throw a big Engagement Party. We wanted something stress free and something we could invite all our friends and family to and not be so limited with numbers. We held it at Tom Tom Bar and Eatery in Auckland CBD and were so happy with the outcome. Tom Tom took care of everything and made the entire experience so easy.

The first thing we planned for the wedding was the venue. We wanted a venue that had a real natural and organic beauty. I’m also a real foodie, so the menu and wine list had to be equally as impressive. Mudbrick Vineyard and Restaurant on Waiheke was the perfect choice. We were very fortunate as Mudbrick books out years in advance but we somehow managed to secure a spot for summer 2017.

My inspiration for the wedding is quite natural/neutral tones. To have a real classic elegance but at the same time bring in some modern, bohemian styles too. I have been so lucky to pair up with some of Auckland’s most amazing vendors. To name a few, The Floral Stylist is taking care of all the florals and styling aspects, their work is stunning. The Narrative of Love is taking care of the photography. I am in love with his dreamy style and love his use of film photography. Our Wedding stationery is by the amazing Harlan Creative.

I work in Sydney Monday-Friday and as Sydney has some of the best dress designers in the business it was such an easy decision to get my dress made there. I brought my mum and best friend (MOH) over for the day for my first fitting. My dress is being custom made and I am so excited for the final product!

We are looking forward to a relaxed, love filled day, with good music, amazing food, friends and family.

Thank you SO much Allie, it sounds like you’ve done an amazing job of organising your wedding so far, and if the proposal and engagement party are anything to go by, it will be a stunning wedding (I hope we can share that too!)
