I’m a sun-worshipper through and through, summer-lover, rays-catcher and suntan-chaser. If you’re like me, Autumn can feel a little gloomy with its earlier-nights and overcast days, but only if you let it. Instead of counting the daylight hours, count all of the beautiful colours the season brings and the shades of Autumn which begin appearing in beauty releases.
Face and Lips
Autumn heralds the need for a darker lip in berry tones or a classic deep red. These are a couple I’ve had for a while, and waited for the time to wear again, and a new product I’ll be trying out right away.
MAC’s lip colour Dark Side is a vampy, seductive shade, part of last year’s Magic of the Night collection, worn well with MAC’s Auburn lip-liner pencil, a perfectly oxblood tone that’s made for this season.
For daywear, Benefit’s Bene-balm in red is a hydrating tinted lip-balm, and I’ve also fallen for the Among the Fireflies which is a great day-wear alternative to the berry tones and can be worn with Clinique’s Intense Cola for a more defined outer line. Newest in my bag is the budget-friendly Karen Murrell bright Rumba Rhythm red.
Alongside red lipsticks is a bright rosy cheek with Benefit’s Bene tint in rose-tinted. In moving to a bold lip colour, I’ll also switch to more muted, understated eyes in brown, rather than black, with a gold shadow for night. Estee Lauder’s Magic Smoky Slow Burn is the perfect shadow, it’s a brown-based pencil which goes on like a powder shadow, with a hint of gold. I’ll be lining my eyes with Benefit’s They’re Real Push up Liner in brown, and even moving to brown mascara.
Autumn is a great time to empty out your makeup and put back in just those products that will give you a pop of colour and life, and introduce some new ones in darker tones, berry lips, gold eyes and these super-hydrating and warm new beauty and skincare releases.
Longtime-favourite Manuka Doctor’s Brightening Facial Oil is perfect for the season, it includes Manuka Oil, is deeply nourishing and non-greasy. Apply every day through the cool, dry months and your skin will thank you for it. I’ll also be using Manuka Dr’s radiance serum and SPF20 CC Cream – don’t forget the sun can still do damage to your skin in Autumn. Garnier UltraLift is perfect Autumn moisturiser. It fights wrinkles and loss of firmness with Pro-retinal, and with SPF 15 it’s a great every-day wear. Trilogy’s latests are a Hydrating Mist-Toner to spritz dry skin, and Everything Balm, to apply everywhere from dry elbows and lips to all over your hands and cuticles.
Hair needs post-summer hydration too, which it’ll have in spades from L’Oreal and Kerastase’s line-up here.
This lush bright pumpkin-orange is Kerastase which has been my go-to summer masque (I’m onto my second or third tub), and I’ll be switching it up with Redken’s Frizz Dismiss, which helps to smooth unruly frizz-prone hair with aquatoril and Brazilian oils. This L’Oreal UltraRIch mist is a final-touch shine-mist ($19), to follow L’Oreal’s Elvive Shampoo and Conditioner, one of my shampoo staples for colour protection.
Kerastase’s newest range is its Elixirs – pictured is BB Creme which is a protector as well as a hydrator: white flower oil and pomegranate extracts make for something delicious. Another newbie, for me at least, is Argania’s Liquid Gold Hair Oil ($35) which detangles, protects and adds shine.
I know I talk about twirl ties $10 a lot, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to pick up these bright and cheerful ones for Autumn too. No more kinks, no more headaches from too-tight ponytails, and no more broken hairties (these last and last). If you haven’t replaced your hairbrush for years, try a Via D-tangler $10 or this Rosewood Brush $25. Pictured with gold slides $6 and hair cuff $8
Body and Beyond
If your tan is part of your identity, regardless of the season, warm up your skin with Benefit’s brand new release Zero Tan Lines, or build a gradual glow with Garnier’s Summerbody Lotion ($9) which doubles as a 24-hour moisturiser for soft and supple skin.
For a facial bronze, the only thing I’ll be wearing is Benefit’s Dew the Hoola liquid bronzer and my new personalised Benefit Hoola, a natural looking bronze that literally has my name on it (P.S. buy 2 or more Benefit products from Sephora and receive a Hawaii make-up bag).
As the weather cools I’ll also change up my nail shades from pretty pinks to plums, berries and golds like these three: Essie’s bronzed bombshell Leggy Legend ($22) and In the Lobby and L’oreal’s Colour Riche in Rouge Pin Up ($10).
Autumn also means some of my favourite foods and smells like pumpkin soup, apple pie and hot chocolates, berries and dark chocolate. I’ll be holing up at home many a night this autumn getting cosy with all of the above, and heading to bed early with a delicious scented candle too. These MOR new releases are Rosa Noir: Rose, Carnation and Lily of the Valley upon velvety notes of Sandalwood and Musk create a seductive floral fragrance. This Deluxe Soy Candle will also make for a beautiful decorative homeware.
If you’re having an Autumn wedding, bring the bright and sparkle to the day with these golden glowing accessories from Mita too. Gold slides $6.
